Magenta Ray – A Kiss Like This (2026)
Creating music that invites and inspires warmth and comfort from vulnerable, fragile, complex experiences, Magenta Ray, in their own words, is “bringing the darkness into the light.” Born from the passionate collision of Lisa Hart and Mark Larson – I don’t mean literally, just their musicality – Magenta Ray is human connection transported through poetic lyrics and moving melodies straight into our ears. This is our introduction to the US-based pair, so join us as we delve headfirst into their single, ‘A Kiss Like This’.
The first release since their self-titled EP in 2019, ‘A Kiss Like This’ is a return to the streaming scene and marks a new chapter in what Magenta Ray plans or hopes to be. Produced in their home studio, the track is an eclectic jump back to yesteryear’s grunge scene with a darker, more gothic alternative rock obscurity. A bold bass acts like the spine of the track, with crashing drums twirling about the backbone. However, just as that anchor stands out, an eclectic swirl, swerve and soaring of Larson’s guitars leaps out and drives the track.
Hypnotic in one way, Larson tosses you from one side of a tumultuous sonic whirlpool to the other as you lose yourself in the grungy sound. Yet, as much as the instrumentation takes hold, it is Hart’s delicate vocals that dance across the tune, grab your hand, and throw her head back as you both chuckle with impish mischief.
Intoxicating, enchanting, and a bit of a trip, ‘A Kiss Like This’ oozes vulnerability, confusion, but mostly pure passion. Adding to this zeal, ‘A Kiss Like This’ has a heartfelt, universal theme. Magenta Ray explains:
“’A Kiss Like This’ was one of our songs created during Covid lockdown. We actually were in heaven, getting to spend time together and work on music. I know it was a very difficult time for many, but we were blissed out. We drew on our profound personal connection and the pure magic of finding true love. It captures that rare, electrifying moment when two people align on both a physical and spiritual level. The song reflects the intense anticipation, vulnerability, and unstoppable passion of a first kiss when you realise you’ve met your soulmate and there’s no turning back.”
