Between the struggles we all face each day and the pressure from world events, we can all use a little bit of positivity now and then. Fortunately for all of us, Peter Manning Robinson has created ‘Bent Out of Shape’, a lively and joyful track that offers the upliftment we all need. Using his own struggles, he created the music for the single as a way to express his emotions and work out the issues through something joyful and whimsical.
While the music can easily sweep you up in the cinematic piano stylings, there is also a fantastic music video that draws you further into the uplifting world of the song. Through the video by Klaus Hoch, a story of reconciliation is crafted through the surreal tour of shared history.
The piano line that opens the track is gentle before a little twirl hits you. The opening notes are soft and expansive, but that twirl niggles at the corners of your senses, trying to get your attention. The interplay between the lines of the piano composition is wonderful as you are lulled into the gentle movements, only to have your attention masterfully directed where Robinson wants it to be.
While the single is fully instrumental, you can feel the emotions and the story of the track through the sound. There is a build-up within the single that leads you through a sonic forest into a wide meadow that offers whimsical breezes that gently ruffle long grass and snag lightly at your clothing. As you close your eyes and drift on the piano lines, you are filled with the tale of upliftment that comes out of an experience that had left you a little bent out of shape.
The overall composition of the track is sophisticated and really showcases Robinson’s prowess as a pianist. There are runs of lighter notes that sparkle like light filtering through the canopy of the forest, while that twirl from the start continues throughout the single, keeping a thread through the song that you can’t ignore. By the end of the track, you will feel lighter even if you can’t quite place where you left all your troubles along the way. It is clear that his intent behind this song has worked wonderfully.
If the music on its own isn’t enough to grab you, adding the music video will keep you captivated for the entire almost 5 minutes of the track. The video opens with Robinson playing the piano on a deck overlooking the ocean. The visuals turn into a story of reconciliation that is beautifully played out through a tour of a house and an experience within it. From photos printed out of a photo booth to an almost funhouse experience, the video keeps you watching as the music swirls around you.
