Mild Monk – Don’t Wait (2023)

The brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Henry Stein, Mild Monk is a multi-genre musical project connecting with audiences on an intimate level. Engaging and enthusiastic, US-based Mild Monk (based in California to be specific) is enthralling audiences with local performances, including venues like the San Jose Museum of Modern Art. Yet, it is not only his live shows that garner a following. Featured in publications like Obscure Sound and Content Magazine, Mild Monk is reaching audiences far beyond his Bay Area borders. Come with us as we take a gander (or rather a listen) to this talented musician’s music.

Influenced by diverse genres, Mild Monk presents a sound that is inimitable and almost indescribable, although I will do my best to describe it. With a unique approach to creativity, the singer-songwriter aims to help people reflect, accept and find a sense of inner joy in their lives. Using his new EP Back To Earth, Mild Monk explores balance in life, and ‘Don’t Wait’ (taken from Back To Earth) is his “mantra to not feel held back by societal expectations and norms…”  Mild Monk further shares that during “…the process of finding sounds I wanted to use for this EP, I encountered so much imposter syndrome and feelings of doubt…I wanted to take this frustration and throw it into a song that feels playful and groovy as if the solution is just to take myself less seriously…” – and he did that with ‘Don’t Wait’.

As with most tracks from Back To Earth, ‘Don’t Wait’ has a jovial buoyancy about it. Lying somewhere between synth-pop and indie-pop, the song is upbeat and smile-inducing; however, the slithers of jazz and soul bring a retro groove to the track. Interestingly enough, while old-school sounds are prominent in ‘Don’t Wait’, there is a contemporary pop element making Mild Monk’s music both familiar and fresh.
