N.Y SMOOCH – SUE (2026)
Self-described as the “noise merchants of the Brentford Riviera”, punk trio N.Y SMOOCH bring audiences a blast of scorching, thunderous music with the energy of frenzied imps and the decibel level of hurricanes. Joining the talents of Anton Constantine (guitar and vocals), Spike Summerfield (bass guitar and vocals) and Daniel Newport (drums), the UK-based act has been stomping across the scene with a heap of national gigs. As much as I’d love to enjoy the magic of one of their shows, the lads are reaching my ears with online streaming à la Spotify. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘SUE’.
Produced by Lorenzo De Feo, N.Y SMOOCH’s sophomore single ‘SUE’ is a concoction of thrashing drums, a bold bass and a scorching guitar quivering in a crystal bottle of tumultuous punk flair. The thing is, within the music made for mosh pits with abrupt brashness, a strange rhythmic harmony exists. A smoothness belies the punk tones, and I think that might be the rich, easy-on-the-ears vocals. It’s something you can’t quite explain but need to listen and feel to understand – in other words, hit the play button on ‘SUE’.
I could go all psychoanalysis on ‘SUE’, but this one is far more Casanova than Oedipus. A tale of “the romanticism of an intoxicated yet short-lived companionship”, lyrics like “Sue, I want you in my room / Stick to me like glue / Sue, I need you” capture the intense intimacy of desire, lust and yearning. Yet, while brief encounters might be the quick Casanova love ‘em and leave ‘em, N.Y SMOOCH acknowledge that aftermath of why you had so much fun, wondering how to find yourself again, and desperately wanting to know “Where is Sue? No one knows”.
‘SUE’ may be a quick moment in time that may or may not be remembered, considering the slick of intoxication; however, N.Y SMOOCH is an act that will stick in our minds for longer than a quick night of passion.
