Naomi Pacifique – somewhere between eating and dreaming (2023)

With extraordinary talent as a highly creative individual, multi-disciplinary artist Naomi Pacifique has gained a reputation for critical, profound, expressive songs, films and poetry. Born in Costa Rica but raised in Switzerland, the Swiss-Dutch singer-songwriter is known for her personal performances. While we look at her as a musician, Pacifique is an award-winning filmmaker and producer with her work featured at international film festivals like Berlinale. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘somewhere between eating and dreaming’.

Already hitting our virtual pages with her singles ‘was it the dregs of night’ and ‘the sea is coming in’, The Other Side Reviews is no stranger to Naomi Pacifique. Ahead of her debut album, look, the wind is coming for us, ‘somewhere between eating and dreaming’ fuses elements of acoustic folk, electronica and shoegaze wrapped in a fuzzy sonic wrapper. Sitting at over 8 minutes in length, this is one of Pacifique’s longest songs; however, it seems to be far too short as you lose time when listening to the track. Before you know it, you need to hit that repeat button again.

Similar to her previous single ‘it was’, there is a delicate haunting floating throughout the cinematic soundscape of ‘somewhere between eating and dreaming’. Doing what it says on the tin, the single lifts you to an ethereal state of being between something and another thing – all I know is the sensation is entirely psychedelic.

Finding a line between organic and synthetic, there is a polished sophistication to the track. Interestingly enough, despite the elegant polish in the production, the vocal execution and obscure arrangement tinges ‘somewhere between eating and dreaming’ with a raw, wistful, slightly disconcerting innocence.
