Natalie Shay – Heaven (2022)

Combining infectious, hard-hitting beats with classical training, UK-based Natalie Shay has an edginess that is unique and eclectic. With her youthful energy she has won over critics and listeners alike performing at notable festivals including Reading Festival, Y Not?, and Hyde Park’s British Summer Time festival. An award-winning singer-songwriter, Shay has a bold presence amidst her growing following and is receiving more attention beyond her UK borders. One of the latest additions to her repertoire is the single ‘Heaven’.

Taken off her new EP MILK, ‘Heaven’ is an autobiographical exploration of Shay’s world. Focusing on femininity and entering adulthood, the track is a song of personal growth exploring the time when “a girl feels like she has become a woman…”. Shay explains that ‘Heaven’ has a personal narrative where the young girl reflects on and accepts her flaws when entering womanhood. It’s empowering, inspiring and really something all of us need to take on board.

While she has vast experience in the music industry – Eurovision even asked her to be on the jury in 2018 – Natalie Shay retains a naïve innocence in her sophisticated sound. Amidst the explosive and unforgettable anthems in her repertoire, Shay adopts a folk sound in ‘Heaven’ scattered with electronic beats throughout the melody. It is this meeting of old-school folk ballads with a contemporary EDM-like arrangement that makes Natalie Shay unique in the music world. A mention needs to be made for the scorching guitar riffs leading up to the catchy chorus in ‘Heaven’.

So, what do I really think about Natalie Shay and ‘Heaven’? Smooth, intoxicating and with a sound that is purely Natalie Shay, ‘Heaven’ will slither into your ear, rattle about your brain and slide down your spine with a slick charm.
