Pariis Opera House – U I (2022)

As technology becomes ever more ingrained in our lives, there are human interactions and experiences that start to lose their organic spontaneity. This is something Pariis Opera House explores with their single ‘U I’. Through the music, the duo considers the technological cycle that we all fall into, moving from the allure of something new to a reliance on technology and the dangers this presents.

Delving into the fact that more and more aspects of life are being moulded by algorithms and data points, the single combines musical styles to bring the nuance of life to sonic glory. A primarily electronic duo, they are based in London and LA and have gained support from BBC 6Music. They have also supported acts including Edith Bowman and Zane Lowe at clubs and music festivals between creating songs for films, video games and TV shows.

The electronic-tinged vocals that open ‘U I’ yank you into the single. It is a really interesting vocal line that brings a sense of humanity to the single, while adding a serious hit of technology and electronica. The performance has this flow to it that gets you moving to the rhythm, while the lyrics will get stuck in your brain. It is a fun vocal line to fall into, while the lyrics have a rather stark message woven into them. Diving beneath the almost childlike electronic vocals, you are treated to the dangers of our growing dependence on technology. As the single progresses, the tempo of the electronic vocals is slowed down, bringing a new edge to the message. This turns into a faster flow that starts to overlap with other vocal lines for a really great single.

Beneath the opening vocals, there is a building melodic movement that brings touches of EDM to an almost futuristic electronic movement. The beats that flow between the electronic pulses are tinged with EDM. This is all thrown on its head by the push of the guitar that offers an organic interlude to the press of electronica. The interplay between the electronic and organic tones is a sonic representation of the relationship humanity has with technology. As the single progresses, the electronic tones drop slightly for the more organic tones, before the vocals speed through and throw everything back into the interplay of sounds. In the last moments of the single, everything comes to a head with a slight cacophony of elements, each vying for dominance.

Through the interesting interplay of electronic and organic instrumentation in ‘U I’, Pariis Opera House has you bouncing around to an exploration of the impact of technology. The vocals are the first thing to grab your attention with their almost childlike electronic movement that dives into the dangers of our growing dependence on technology. The melody brings this relationship to life through the push and pull of electronic pulses and pushing guitars.
