Pisgah – Favor (2025)
The brainchild of singer-songwriter Brittney Jenkins, Pisgah is a solo project that explores the complexities of reality, from personal tragedies to living with the aftermath of natural disasters. Bright and dark, confident and fragile, vulnerable but with a sense of sincerity wafting through the melodies, Jenkins showcases sophistication and maturity in her poetic songs. This is our introduction to Pisgah, so I’m entirely unsure what to expect; I do know, however, that it should be an intriguing one with her inspirations ranging from the gothic darkness of The Cure to the alt-country roots of Ryan Adams. Join me as we delve into her single, ‘Favor’.
While she is based in London, UK, the creation of ‘Favor’ is an international feat, being recorded in Jenkins’ home studio while mixed and mastered by the Austin, USA-based producer Dan Duszynski – proof that you don’t need to be in the same space, or even on the same continent, to have creative collaborations. Following her single ‘Cumulonimbus’, ‘Favor’ drags you back to the 90s indie-rock and alt-rock scene with the likes of The Cranberries shimmering across the track. With an obscurity leaning toward the vocal stylings of Dolores O’Riordan and Alanis Morissette, Brittney Jenkins weaves an off-kilter lilt around a harmonic union of soaring guitars and pulsating drums.
Melodically, ‘Favor’ has a degree of elegance, binding the raw naivety and tragedy; however, it is the lyricism that seems to add weightiness. Using the metaphor of a natural disaster to represent a tumultuous relationship, Jenkins explains:
“I wrote ‘Favor’ at a really difficult time, when I was in the middle of falling out with someone close to me. I felt myself trying so hard to meet their expectations, and feeling completely incapable because I couldn’t stop abandoning my own needs in the relationship. I know this is a common experience, so I wanted to capture it in a song, the best I could.
