Romain Gutsy – Lany (2023)
For over 20 years, singer-songwriter Romain Gutsy has had his foot in the music industry entertaining audiences and collaborating with artists across the globe. Hailing from France, Gutsy has performed as part of bands like Daffy Plays Mandola and Les Affamés. He has also played with American singer Calvin Russel and the award-winning band Soul Asylum. Influenced by American and Irish folk singers, Gutsy has created a unique folk meets pop meets indie-rock mishmash of sound turning heads on an international scale. From Music Arena GH to Illustrate Magazine, Send Me Your Ears and Indie Dock Music Blog, he has been described as “full of charm and humour” (Less Than 1000 Followers) with a “beautiful tone and style” (Sinusoidal Music). The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Lany’.
Hot on the heels of his singles ‘Like An Uyghur In China’ and ‘Trouble and Delicious’, ‘Lany’ retains Gutsy’s deep, gruff vocals but brings a unique jazzy cheekiness to the melody. While the track has a contemporary folk quality, ‘Lany’ is a nostalgic throwback to the pop and jazz sounds of the 50s. Describing the song as a “jazzy folk” production, producer Marc Bentel layers different genres and instrumentation for an organic-sounding track. Of course, it is Gutsy’s distinctive raspy growls that bring the theme and sound of ‘Lany’ home.
Reminiscent of Nick Cave’s baritone, a gothic darkness creeps into ‘Lany’ with Gutsy’s overwhelming vocals; however, the song itself is not creepy or dark in the least. Gutsy explains that ‘Lany’ is “a love song, quite a normal one this time, but still with some element of humour like a statement of the one who sees he is under a love spell and can’t do anything else than surrender…”
