Savanna Blu – Something to Cry About (2022)

There are many people who try to find the silver lining in the most damaging situations. This can lead them to do anything they can to keep things going, even when it isn’t in their best interest. Savanna Blu tells the story of a moment of transition for these people through ‘Something to Cry About’ as they start to place the blame where it is due and move on without any guilt.

The single is told from the perspective of a broken heart and devastated ego, but carries a tender touch in the folk tones. It also marks a change in the direction of Savanna Blu’s music as it continues to evolve and form into something newer. Laying down some hard truths padded with endless love, she leaves you with a lot to think about.

‘Something to Cry About’ gently draws you in with a tender higher tone and delicate acoustic guitar. The tap of the drum fills the lower levels of the melody like a pounding heart. The relatively stripped-back melody lets the vocals shine and brings a tender emotion to the track. The melody creates a space of honesty for Savanna Blu to let everything out and heal from past pain. As the single progresses, there is humming depth to the music that grows and tries to lift you up. The load on your shoulders is fully lifted later in the track as melodic lines sweep across your skin and shine with the light of hope for the future.

While the melody brings the space to share feelings, it is Savanna Blu’s vocals that really make the single. Her performance is vulnerable and honest as she lays out what she is feeling and dissects the relationship and bad situations she has been in. There is a question of who is really to blame woven into the track, that turns into the knowledge of where to truly place the blame. You can feel the awakening and realisation in her performance which is beautiful to hear. Her performance is packed with emotion that leaves you feeling stronger for having heard what she has to say.

Using open and honest vocals, Savanna Blu works through bad situations and realisations that build strength and confidence in ‘Something to Cry About’. The music has a stripped-back feeling that allows the vocals to shine. Her vocal performance has a wonderful honesty and vulnerability that highlights the emotions of the lyrics.
