Silver Lake – Under the Silver Lake (2022)

With their debut single ‘Under the Silver Lake’, Silver Lake dives deep into the reality of the unconscious. Drawing on the ambience of the movie of the same name, this single brings a touch of the surreal to what lies beneath the surface. Through the lyrics, the band considers the place where desire and fear meet and where lost loves, hope and dreams come back in unpredictable ways.

Swirling with all the thoughts, colours and emotions that flit through our brains, the single slips past your defences to play with every part of your subconscious. Jesse Koch and Marleen Hoebe are the duo behind this dive into our minds. The slip into the subconscious is the foundation of this musical project whose name is a symbol of the mind.

‘Under the Silver Lake’ has a slightly ominous and sinister feeling to the opening. The trill of the instrumentation adds to the drop into the rippling dark waters of the melody. The music has a glassy feeling on the surface that keeps what is beneath hidden. The movement of the music is rich and atmospheric as it creates fog that hangs over still waters. Woven into this is a call to dive into the depths of the waters, regardless of what might be waiting for you. It is a really captivating movement that makes you want to close your eyes and relax back into the music. The different lines of instrumentation merge and diverge wonderfully to create the threads of light and thought that rests beneath the surface of your subconscious.

Koch’s vocals open the vocal performance, adding to the sinister touches of the music. There is a duality to the lyrics as they tell a story of someone waiting under the water. While there is a clear tale to the lyrics, there is a deeper meaning that brings the convoluted thoughts that undulate in the dark recesses of our minds to light. Hoebe’s vocals wisp against Koch’s to create a decadent interplay of vocals that creates a beautiful richness to the track. This is a song that you can easily have on repeat and will never get tired of.

Through ‘Under the Silver Lake’, Silver Lake brings a glassy sheen to hidden depths that churn with double meaning and the dark recesses of our minds. The melody has a sinister touch as it beckons you into the depths of the water. Koch’s vocals touch on the sinister nature of the water, while Hoebe adds richness to the performance.
