The Trusted – Doomsday (2023)

From 2018 with their track ‘No Real Control’ to the single ‘Terrible Fight’ in 2023, indie-rock group The Trusted have intoxicated our team at The Other Side Reviews with their intriguing music. Earmarked as one of the most exciting acts to emerge from the UK in several years, the Southend-on-Sea natives are turning heads across the globe with their catchy, infectious, guitar-driven rock. Distinctive to say the least, The Trusted are anything but pedestrian and never overlooked. Selling out tours, receiving international radio airplay, featuring in notable international publications, and constantly building their fanbase, it isn’t long before The Trusted are performing to audiences far beyond their UK borders. For now, however, we’re sitting back with their latest single ‘Doomsday’.

Following the critically acclaimed single ‘Terrible Fight’, The Trusted take a step further toward guitar-driven alternative rock in ‘Doomsday’. A tribute to the sounds of late 90s/early 2000s rock, ‘Doomsday’ is brash, bold and powerful in its delivery. Recorded, produced and mixed by Rees Broomfield of SS2 Studios, the melody is filled with pounding drums and scorching guitars adding a brash, fiery feeling to the track. However, just as there is a feistiness in ‘Doomsday’, a mellifluous flow slithers through with a vulnerable intimacy.

‘Doomsday’ has an indescribable power in its delivery with a foot-stomping, heart-pumping breath of alternative rock. Yet, despite the confidence in the instrumentation and vocals, a complex fragility drips from Tom Cunningham’s rich voice. It is this complete capture of intricate themes in their songs that make The Trusted a force to be reckoned with. Highly personal, ‘Doomsday’ is one of the more serious and introspective of the band’s current releases.

“We’re living in a world on the brink of war and collapse, yet ‘Doomsday’ is a song about a more personal Armageddon. We all have our own, in-built doomsday clocks and sometimes our minds can reach a breaking point…It’s a loud rocket-fuelled cry for help; a psychological apocalypse.” – Tom Cunningham on ‘Doomsday’

Sophisticated, poetic and filled with a heartbreaking, soul-stirring dash of raw vulnerability, The Trusted astound us once again with ‘Doomsday’.
