Tom Minor – Expanding Universe (2025)

A 21st-century singer-songwriter and wordsmith with a bad-ass attitude and moving music, Tom Minor uses enchanting narratives to celebrate life in all its grit, glory, and sometimes creepiness. Previously gracing our pages with ‘Future Is An F Word’ and ‘Is Everything Okay?’, the UK-based musician delves into the complexities of relationships, self-discovery, and reality as we know it. Today, we take a gander at his most recent – and potentially most provocative – single, ‘Expanding Universe’.

Following the well-received track, ‘Future Is An F Word’, Minor has us once again contemplating life with profound inner reflection; however, ‘Expanding Universe’ may be a bit bigger than questioning “…how you really are and how things should be in your life”. From the individual self to the greater society, ‘Expanding Universe’ is an intriguing social narrative. It does not necessarily evade a questioning of ourselves, but points to the larger case of universal “bullies” and how it affects our lives, future and present.  Minor explains:

“’Expanding Universe’ was written a couple of moons back, but it could hardly be more topical than now at the time of its release when all manner of global bullies (including but not limited to the big tech biggies also known as the Four Henchmen of the Trumpocalypse, who have long since forgotten about one of their earlier mottoes – don’t be evil) are selling us short down the live stream on a daily basis while we rush to pay them for it.”

Lyrically, ‘Expanding Universe’ is a powerful thwack with the question of “what is it all about?” Melodically, however, the track navigates a sonic haze in the hard-hitting brashness of a sonic mire. Joined by The Creatures of Habit, ‘Expanding Universe’ continues with an avant-garde sentimentality binding this concoction of indie-rock, Britpop and power-pop.

Returning with producer Teaboy Palmer, the new single is… well, in a word, obscure. Instead of a mellifluous combination of crashing drums, soaring guitars, and a bold bass, the arrangement takes its distortion to another level. For me, the abruptness of the staccato instrumentation is jarring, and the quick vocals enhance its urgency. It is this urgency that not only encapsulates the poignancy of ‘Expanding Universe’s tune but also aligns with its powerful theme.
