When we’re children many of us use our imagination taking us to a faraway place where we beat the bad guys, save the person who’s stuck in that tower and become a superhero. To be honest, in our quiet moments as adults, we also let our imaginations take us to the highest heights. Known for his work with Carmen Grey and The Impersonators, award-winning singer-songwriter Tom Tikka has a knack for connecting those imaginings with poetic lyrics and moving melodies. In ‘Fire And Ice’, he takes us back to the days of imagination.
Following the chart hit ‘Something New’, veteran musician Tom Tikka is joined by his producer and multi-instrumentalist Janne Saska as part of the “make-believe band” The Missing Hubcaps on ‘Fire And Ice’. Shifting to a more upbeat sound from the soft ballad of ‘Something New’, the new song has a heart-warmingly toe-tapping vibe bound in an indie-rock wrapper. A sliver of folk flits through the melody bringing sincerity with its rawness. Tikka’s gruff vocals take on a more tender tone slithering through a light-hearted but hard-hitting arrangement of guitars, drums and a hint of percussion.
The oscillation between folksy rock and heavier indie-rock enhances the charming theme of ‘Fire and Ice’ – childhood imagination. Well, actually it’s from the perspective of a contented, charmed parent watching his children revel in a world of pirates. You can feel the happiness, pleasure and warm gaze of a father looking on in adoration. Tikka explains:
“Life is funny. One day you are a little kid playing pirates with your brother and the next day you have kids of your own. Time goes by so fast. It’s scary. ‘Fire and Ice’ was written as I watched by two youngest boys playing pirates with their grandpa. It was quite endearing. They had a swordfight and all. Grandpa stood his ground well but in the end, the pirates won…”
Sincere, sentimental and a masterful reflection of a loving parent living in a world of utter joy, Tom Tikka & The Missing Hubcaps release the single ‘Fire And Ice’.
