Track of the Day: Cove – Rain (2024)
Drawing together the natural musical talent of Tommaso Monaco (vocals and bass), Mattia Sottoriva (guitar) and Vittorio Dal Maso (drums), the Italian group Cove is a heady twirl of kaleidoscopic tones. While there is a strong rock leaning to Cove’s sound, this heady mixture combines the various influences of each member. Influenced by Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes, Monaco and Sottoriva brought alternative and indie-rock sounds; however, a dash of jazz and new wave drips from Dal Maso’s bag of inspiration. Don’t leave it at the rock meets synths style as Monaco blends pop-punk and classical music into the mixture. A melting pot, I think you’ll agree, and it all comes to the fore in Cove’s debut single ‘Rain’.
Already an award-winning solo artist, Tommaso Monaco confidently leads Cove with energetic exuberance; but this is a trio, not a solo act. Just as Monaco’s confidence adds a driving boldness to Cove’s sound, drummer Dal Maso and guitarist Sottoriva prove to be a force of nature wrapped in a sonic wrapper. In ‘Rain’, the lads take a nostalgic look at the sounds of The Strokes with a flutter of The White Stripes but layered in modern-day rock. Familiar but retro and appealing to audiences of different ages.
An intriguing single from both a melodic and lyrical perspective, ‘Rain’ is a song oscillating between light and dark; an ebb and flow of moving music. Crashing drums collide with scorching guitars and a bold bass demanding each be given prominence; however, just as they each stand tall, everything comes together in a harmonic whole.
As I stated, the melody is intriguing but so are the lyrics. Penned by frontman Tommaso Monaco, ‘Rain’ taps deeper into the essence of human emotion. Cove explains:
“You can’t help but think about black, heavy clouds approaching when you hear the riff of ‘Rain’. As the rain can wash away a bad relationship, it can wash away a bad relationship, it can also symbolise a new beginning.”
