Track of the Day: Jay Morgan – Come Back Home

Many musicians are taking COVID-19 lockdowns in their stride producing so much outstanding material I hardly know where to look; this is the case with Jay Morgan. Penned from his sickbed during mid-2020, the UK-based singer-songwriter captured the essence of these uncertain times. Known for his emotive vocals and enchanting melodies, Morgan has received coverage from RGM, Talk About Pop Music, The National Post and BBC Radio Leeds. Without further gilding the lily, may we introduce Jay Morgan and his single ‘Come Back Home’.

Primarily a percussion-driven track with powerful drums and a simple, heartwrenching piano, Morgan showcases the beauty of simplicity. It is not necessary to have tons of synths, guitars and overly produced “fanciness” to create a soul-stirring sound. All you need is melodic harmonies pushing a sincere theme. Think Simon & Garfunkel or Jeff Buckley, their music is breathtaking without the proverbial bells and whistles.

“When the pandemic struck the world it changed, including my own. I had coronavirus symptoms that affected my breathing and ability to function to full capacity. I had time on my hands and suddenly I was writing songs that had powerful lyrics… For me it’s a track that means personal belief, caring for my partner who works in the healthcare sector and hoping during the pandemic she would come back home.” -Jay Morgan on ‘Come Back Home’

Atop the enchanting piano and drums, Morgan’s rich, warm voice adds a robustness to the sentimental lyricism. The personal narrative makes the track engaging reaching global audiences with heartfelt storytelling with lingering feelings of hopeful melancholy. I can’t really aptly describe the ‘Come Back Home’ – it has an intimacy and intensity that is better felt than described. All I know is the track gave me goosebumps and evoked a tear or two.
