Track of the Day: NazTheMoon – Crimson (2024)

At only 19 years of age, singer-songwriter Naz has an understanding of life far beyond her years. Performing as NazTheMoon, the US-based artist delves into the deeper, darker, desperate themes, as well as the happier, lighter and jovial areas of growing up. Showcasing sophistication and maturity beyond her years, however retaining a youthful innocence and raw naivety, you feel the pain, live the pain, and step out of the pain with Naz leading the way. With only two singles beneath her belt, she is a pebble within the sonic pool, yet she is turning heads on an international scale garnering an intrigued following. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Crimson’.

Following her debut single ‘Local Freak Act’, Naz shifts from a grunge-laced burst of alternative rock to a stronger blend of alternative rock with hard rock in ‘Crimson’. Despite being strongly influenced by contemporary rock acts like Spiritbox and Glass Heart, NazTheMoon leans toward vintage bands, breathing life into the sounds of Garbage, The Cranberries and Hole. Fresh but familiar, retro is met by modern-day twists in a style completely her own.

The melody itself is intoxicating with the dynamic guitars and pounding drums tossing you into a tumultuous sonic ocean; however, the poetic lyricism brings the chaotic waves to life… as well as stabilising them. As I mentioned, her art exceeds her years and Naz connects with audiences on an intimate level using personal narratives. ‘Local Freak Act’ touched on the perception of time – leaving the past to embrace a passionate new future. ‘Crimson’ tingles with this sophisticated narrative exploring the complexity of growing up in the 21st century. Naz explains:

“The song is about growing up too quick and struggling with mental health, later bringing a person down a roar of addiction that they are scared of. It ends with being pulled out of the never-ending spiral of addiction and feeling happy again, but still being scared of growing up.”
