Track of the Day: Nick Mintenko – Vagabond

With a reputation for a genre-hopping style with whimsical playfulness, Canada-based artist Nick Mintenko certainly makes an impression on listeners. In fact, his impression is reaching audiences far beyond Canada with features on Roadie Music, Send Me Your Ears, RGM and various podcasts/playlists. The latest addition to Mintenko’s well-received discography is the single ‘Vagabond’.

Never nervous to approach provocative themes, Mintenko’s ‘Vagabond’ is profound and poignant layered in a melodic song. The first of several releases, ‘Vagabond’ touches on human fragility, vulnerability, resilience and persistence. Celebrating the power of escapism and consequential empowerment, the new track is an eclectic, toe-tapping tune. The thing is, while the track follows a whimsical wistfulness, it was inspired by the “threat of real life” beginning to creep back after a carefree summer. Written during a time of longing for escape, ‘Vagabond’ really delivers the light-hearted whimsy of freedom.

Following his live EP, Phantom (Live) (released in 2021), ‘Vagabond’ leans toward the sounds of Bruno Mars, Paolo Nutini, Lewis Capaldi and Jason Mraz. Soft, soothing and charming, the track tips you into a comfortable swirl of sound. It is difficult to describe this track, but the closest I can come is happy, cheery, calming and chilled-out. A song about carefree empowerment, personal power and celebrating the self, ‘Vagabond’ leaves you with a sense of true joy in your soul. For me, listening to Nick Mintenko allows you to let out a deep breath of frustration replaced by a rich, warm fuzziness.

This is my introduction to Nick Mintenko, so I was unsure what to expect – I was, however, pleasantly surprised. The first of several singles to be released over the next six weeks, I cannot wait to hear what else Mintenko has coming up.
