Track of the Day: Tabitha Zu – On Reality (2026)

Known for her distinctive ability to weave intricate melodies with an array of electronic and acoustic elements, Melanie Garside is a force of nature within the alternative, indie and folk worlds. With a career spanning over three decades, the UK-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist first caught our eyes as one half of the duo, Moontwin. As a solo artist, she performs as Maple Bee – a project that delves into deeply personal, sometimes painful human experiences. Today, however, we’re taking a step all the way back to 1992 as Garside re-releases the Tabitha Zu classic, ‘On Reality’.

A cult snapshot of the 1990s underground scene, Tabitha Zu sat alongside contemporaries like Nirvana, Nick Cave and Public Enemy. With Garside fronting the group as vocalist and guitarist, Phil Stevenson on bass, and John Hamilton on drums, Tabitha Zu blended chaotic, gritty, punk energy with an infectious pop vibe, earning them a reputation as one of a compelling act, live or on your record player. While Tabitha Zu (later known as Zu) might not be around any longer, ‘On Reality’ shakes our stereo speakers as a blast from the past, nostalgic and modern-day with timeless class.

So, what does the song actually sound like, and what do I think about it?

From the outset, ‘On Reality’ is a breathtaking blast of crashing drums, scorching guitars, and a bold bass. With a powerful punk energy, the arrangement brings a sense of infectious urgency to the chaotic bubble of sound. The thing is, while you can become lost in this furious sonic hurricane, certain dashes of power-pop offer a sincerity and soothing lilt, making ‘On Reality’ a thrust to the mosh-pit and a clasp of warm, comfortable music.

A real dive back to the 1990s, ‘On Reality’ could easily be on the soundtrack for films like Reality Bites or Empire Records. It not only captures the heaviness and distinctive grit of the 90s scene, but unpicks the fragility and vulnerability of life with an optimistic, empowering rush of music.

My overall opinion? Tabitha Zu is something I need to learn more about, and ‘On Reality’ is the ideal introduction to this long-lost band. Highly recommended!
