Sad Cypress – Sirens / It Means A Lot To Me (2026)
Drawing comparisons to the likes of PJ Harvey and Kate Bush, singer-songwriter Sad Cypress brings you the tender, heartfelt, yet simultaneously heartbreaking, skin-chilling, kind of eerie music. Enigmatic and obscure, the Welsh musician can steal a soul, but not with force or boldness, but with that secret, ethereal sound leading you deep into sonic forests and away amidst the fairies. Despite her discography going back to 2020’s Magic Mountain, this is our introduction to Sad Cypress – a little late to the party, but better late than never. Join us as we turn up the volume on her latest release, ‘Sirens / It Means A Lot To Me’.
Taken from her recently released Princess of Cups – an EP chronicling “the loss and rediscovery of buried feelings and the seeds of creative potential that it harbours” – ‘Sirens / ‘It Means A Lot To Me’ occupy two sides of a single coin. On one hand, Sad Cypress looks at bringing spirits to life and awakening with the mythology of the sirens, but instead of drawing sailors to their doom, they are “doing something more interesting away from distraction”. On the other side, ‘It Means A Lot To Me’ is a well of solace, warmth and “a sense of comfort that needs more than language to communicate.”
Divining the ebb and flow from liveliness and subdued contentment, Sad Cypress shows a multi-faceted sonic persona weaving across her melodic tapestry. ‘Sirens’ is short and wistful with a seemingly melancholic tone; however, there is a brightness entwined with a shining sliver tail to entice the mischievous side of the listener. Alternatively, ‘It Means A Lot To Me’ is slower, heavier and more deliberate, delving into the depths of your heart to find comfort in the reassurance of being you.
One aspect I like about Sad Cypress’ double A-sided single is the raw honesty you feel with each chord. Both songs celebrate the power of acoustic music and how you don’t need bells and whistles to create something memorable. ‘Sirens’ strumming guitar and flowing vocals have you floating in a sonic bubble, set to head off on a refreshing adventure. ‘It Means A Lot To Me’ is dull, deep and anchoring with a combination of piano and Sad Cypress’ alto.
Sincere and sentimental, confident and fragile, mystical and natural, Sad Cypress is a feast for the ears and a breath of fresh air for the soul.
