Track of the Day: The Pulltops – Better Life (2023)
From Plastic Magazine to Music For All, Muse Chronicle, Obscure Sound, Os Garotos De Liverpool and various radio stations/playlists, The Pulltops is a force of nature sweeping across the globe. The brainchild of guitarist Tom Crowell and drummer Mark Pierret, the Milwaukee-based duo delivers a mix of indie-rock, pop and soul in their melodies. Unafraid to explore the complexities of human nature in a profound, meaningful way, The Pulltops use toe-tapping songs to capture vulnerable themes. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Better Life’.
Following the well-received track ‘Stronger’, ‘Better Life’ is the latest release off their new EP Between The Lines. Looking at “the underlying theme of personal growth, the struggles we face in life, and the continued search to find your place in this world”, Between The Lines seemingly explores the light and dark side of existence in a melodic container. ‘Better Life’ leans on the issues of finding your place in life, discovering and doing the things you enjoy…a better life, if you will.
Similar to ‘Stronger’, The Pulltops adopt a rock-inspired tone in ‘Better Life’. Yet, unlike ‘Stronger’, the new single is far darker, heavier, and filled with melancholic desperation. Falling beyond any brand of indie-rock, The Pulltops slip into a grungy, gritty type of alternative rock with tinges of hard rock slivering through ‘Better Life’.
Pounding drums match a scorching guitar with light electronic twinkles flittering around the bubble of doom. Interestingly, while ‘Better Life’ appears to be a mire of despair with haunting vocals layered in angsty instrumentation, it is hopeful. The lads explain:
“This darker track captures the frustrations of trying to find your place in life and the things that make you happy when you are surrounded by all the trappings of modern life. We mix retro and modern production to give the track a haunting yet powerful feel.” – The Pulltops on ‘Better Life’
