Transcending Into The Unknown – Giants (2024)

Studies state that natural music talent can be genetic and Transcending Into The Unknown is certainly supporting this fact. Brothers Filip and Robert Dahl, along with Filip’s son Stian, all show remarkable talent as gifted guitarists. Filip Dahl began his career in the 1970s performing with various Norwegian rock bands, while Robert made his name on the 1980s punk/metal scene in the Norwegian city Trondheim. Stian Dahl performed with various punk and metal bands in the 90s and early 2000s, but they all returned with a unique sound in 2024. Filip inserts a bit of Deep Purple and Pink Floyd rock with Robert giving a touch of jazz, blues and stoner rock; Stian adds slips of death metal and blues rock, and what you have is a conglomeration of something original and eclectic.

Earlier last year, Transcending Into The Unknown turned our heads with the self-titled instrumental crossing of blues and progressive rock. Skip ahead a year, and the Norwegian lads are back with the hard-hitting single ‘Giants’. Unlike the previous material, the Dahls shift to heavier, more powerful slices of metal woven through forceful rock with a shimmering tinge. Oscillating between the dark and light of metal, Transcending Into The Unknown takes you on a journey through smooth, gritty, painful and soothing metal tones with tender delicacy.

An aspect I find intriguing about Transcending Into The Unknown is how their music certainly takes you into the unknown. Transcending decades, ‘Giants’ has a strong nostalgic 80s/90s feel; however, just as the Dahls offer a vintage metal style they simultaneously introduce ‘Giants’ with a modern-day melodic metal feel. Gritty rawness belies sophisticated skills, and it is this clinging of contradictory rough and smooth that makes me gasp with awe.

Symphonic and charming but with rugged electricity sparking from the guitars, Transcending Into The Unknown walks amongst giants with this unforgettable new single. My one complaint is that ‘Giants’ ended too soon. It might be five minutes in length, but I can easily listen to these Norwegian musicians for hours and still not get enough. I am eager to hear more from the trio.

In addition to the single, Transcending Into The Unknown released an official music video for ‘Giants’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
