Wyn Starks – Who I Am (2022)

Described by Simon Cowell as “…brilliant”, singer-songwriter Wyn Starks proves that Cowell is not as obnoxious and annoying as he seems – he actually knows what he’s talking about. No offence to Cowell, I’m sure he’s a lovely guy and in this situation, we agree with him entirely. Receiving two standing ovations at his America’s Got Talent audition (as well as moving Sofia Vergara to tears), Starks celebrated his diversity, originality and enthusiasm for music on an international scale. Come with us as we delve into the single that catapulted Starks to international acclaim – ‘Who I Am’.

While the pandemic led to Starks losing his hospitality job, it did encourage him to pursue a musical career and we’re so glad he did. Merging elements of RnB, pop and soul, this US-based musician celebrates diversity and originality – as well as proving he is not to be pigeon-holed. With ‘Who I Am’, Starks presents an intense intimacy wrapped in contemporary pop and soul. I would compare him to John Legend or Ed Sheeran, but I don’t know if that would be fair on any of the artists. With his great vocal range, soothing melody and intoxicating tones, Wyn Starks creates a song that is purely Wyn Starks.

Laidback and gentle, ‘Who I Am’ has a relaxing quality that places you at ease from the first chord. The thing is, ‘Who I Am’ has profoundness exceeding the enchanting melody. The complexity of the arrangement including piano, strings and guitar, oozes into Starks’ warm vocals and poetic lyricism. Melancholic, in a way, there is a vulnerability woven through this sonic tapestry. Interestingly enough, while the production is sophisticated there is a sense of innocent wistfulness enhancing the delicacy of ‘Who I Am’.

Sincere, sentimental, reflective and honest, Wyn Starks carefully explores human fragility in ‘Who I Am’.
