Your Best Nightmare – Ghost Town Love (2023)

If My Chemical Romance were to have a kid with Paramore, the chances are likely it would be Your Best Nightmare. The brainchild of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Erin Porter, Your Best Nightmare swirls about you with her infectious, intoxicating sound. Featured in Illustrate Magazine, Clout, Plastic Magazine, We Write About Music and various others, Porter is quickly garnering a loyal following far beyond her US borders. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Ghost Town Love’.

Following her well-received track ‘Really Cute’, Porter’s sophomore single is here to both entice and terrify listeners. I don’t mean she terrifies listeners into leaving but rather that her presence is simultaneously charming and sweet but with a dark underbelly. In an interview with Illustrate Magazine, Porter explains that she thinks it “scares people to see an unsuspecting blonde spit our dark commentary”.

A trained soprano, Porter tinges her melodies with a classical edge in her soul-stirring vocals. The interesting thing is while you can hear her training, a raw vulnerability oozes from her dulcet voice. Leaning strongly to My Chemical Romance in ‘Ghost Town Love’, I confidently describe Porter as a female Gerard Way…perhaps with fewer dramatics but as much skin-tingling haunting.

Aiming to connect with listeners, Your Best Nightmare looks to resonate with audiences on an emotional scale. In the same interview with Illustrate Magazine Porter shares that “I think I touch on themes and experiences that people have experienced…” As with her debut single ‘Really Cute’, ‘Ghost Town Love’ begs the question of how far we would go for love. In the poetic lyricism, the protagonist “has gone as far as she can and made a ghost town to keep the one she loves alive. It’s an ode to the fantasy of running away with the one you love.”

Ultimately, I adore and highly recommend Your Best Nightmare. From the dynamic guitars and ukelele to the drums, bittersweet lyricism and even the tinkle of bells, ‘Ghost Town Love’ leaves you breathless in its beauty.
