9 o’clock Nasty – Bad Monkey (2024)

Who said deep, brooding silence need come from deep, brooding, “sit back and really think about the depth of the sound” songs? It’s all rubbish, and you’ll realise this when you get a whiff of 9 o’clock Nasty. No, your mind won’t reel with profound thoughts when you sniff their Aqua Velva, it’s the sound emanating from the insatiable trio drawing you to poignant places. In the past, we’ve found ourselves stepping alongside the “aristocrats of punk” carefully treading the fast-moving sidewalk while blissfully floating in an ethereal haze. Today we’re taking a gander at their new single ‘Bad Monkey’.

Following the well-received singles ‘Crowland’, ‘Smash, Grab & Go!’, and ‘Dead Pilot’, ‘Bad Monkey’ slips a slice of pop-rock into 9 o’clock Nasty’s high-voltage punk sound. Filled with nostalgic 80s punk, the lads could share the stage with Joy Division and The Clash, however, ‘Bad Monkey’ shimmers with pop-rock/pop-punk sounds of the late 90s and early 2000s. The hard-hitting punk thread weaving together decades of sound for different generations; ‘Bad Monkey’ is proof that good music transcends time.

Similar to previous material, the distorted rush of pounding drums, scorching guitars and gruff vocals leap from the melody. Yet, a layer of dullness (the heavy dull weight that sits on your chest) clings to ‘Bad Monkey’. Lumbering and heavy, this bad monkey trudges along each chord offering you the chance to join him in his journey. The thing is, just as there is a slice of drudge in the melody, 9 o’clock Nasty’s quickfire sonic blasts belie the tune with an eager shiver. It’s the drunken daze swirling with memories of fantastic night-time frolics before an abrupt end to the melody while you pass out on the floor; good night though.

“Gender politics, fast cars and a beat to make you understand what your mother really felt like when you got home at 5 am dressed as a badger with a gold Krugerrand in your pocket.” – Pete Brock on ‘Bad Monkey’
