Ian Roland – Virtually Free (2026)
One to saunter through the realms of music, catching up varying shades of folk music flowers, rock, pop and some indie daisies peeping amidst the rest, Ian Roland’s discography is a vibrant bouquet brimming with different sounds, colours and sensations. The UK-based musician ended 2025 with singles ’20 Breaths Of Love Per Minute’ and ‘Some Way Of Life’ – a shimmering reach of soft rock and a breath of folk, respectively. Today, we sit back, turn on the speakers, and sniff those sonic flowers with the single, ‘Virtually Free’.
Produced by long-time collaborator Jake Skinner, with mixing by Roland and mastering by Bob Macciochi, ‘Virtually Free’ is self-described as “organic and authentic”. Recorded at the prestigious Brighton Road Recording Studios, the track is a concoction of Roland’s 12-string Guild guitar, Dave Coomber’s bass, James Chapman’s drums, and Mishkin Fitzgerald’s acoustic piano. Similar to ’20 Breaths Of Love Per Minute’, the melody has a soothing, almost soft rock-esque vibe with a folk-inspired flavour teetering along the edges and the heartfelt lyricism executed by Roland’s rich but soft vocals.
Proving that you don’t need any loud crashes or synth-filled sweeps to create a beautiful song, ‘Virtually Free’ calms your nerves amidst a rush of digital, well, everything we encounter each day. A few minutes where you can breathe deeply, relax your mind, and just experience the tranquil fun of the moment. Interestingly, as the melody brings that gentle brush of hush with true connection, ‘Virtually Free’ is actually about human connection and raw emotion. Roland explains:
“’Virtually Free’ touches upon what might be real, what might be fake, and definitions of freedom in between. At its heart is the importance of human connection, community and ultimately love.”
Sincere, sentimental, and a quick break to chill out on a Monday morning, Ian Roland and his crew drive away any Monday blues with their charming new track.
In addition to the single, Ian Roland released an official music video for ‘Virtually Free’. You can view the video below and/or on his YouTube channel.
