A Chat with Krooked Tongue (14.08.20)

Described by Bristol Music Journal as “distorted as hell and dripping with emotion”, the lads of Krooked Tongue are fiery, passionate and highly energetic. Following up from their successful single ‘Girls With Knives’, the Bristol-based trio released the dynamic ‘Dance Like The Bull’. We speak with Krooked Tongue about the new single, the accompanying video and feeling nostalgic.

OSR: What is the backstory to ‘Dance Like The Bull’?

Krooked Tongue: Really, it’s about the self doubts that we all have. It kind of hopes to slap you out of it and talk yourself back into your appreciation of self-worth.

OSR: What was the recording and writing process like?

Krooked Tongue: Me (Oli) and Dan were playing around with some riff ideas and Dan started playing the main riff and I immediately saw the potential in it turning into something. So I took that riff for the chorus and intro and wrote the rest of the song around that before taking it into rehearsal for Harry to work out some drum parts.

OSR: Do you feel ‘Dance Like The Bull’ diggers from your previous releases in any way?

Krooked Tongue: Yes, we feel as if this latest track is reflective of what’s to come in terms of a cohesive sound and where the sound is going. Although we appreciate the mad love we’ve gotten for the first two singles we released we feel as though the slight transition between them and ‘DLTB’ isn’t unwelcomed.

OSR: You released an accompanying music video for ‘Dance Like The Bull’ using ballet to express the message in the single. Why ballet and who came up with the idea for the video?

Krooked Tongue: I (Oli) had the idea a while back. I really liked the idea of the juxtaposition between the elegance of ballet and the punchiness of the track. Plus, Rosie is an incredible dancer.

OSR: When was the latest time you felt nostalgic?

Krooked Tongue: All the time. Life comes and goes super-fast and it’s hard not to miss things that made you feel a certain way. Nostalgia is an important lesson in treasuring memories as they’re made; they’re what bind people together.

OSR: What makes you happiest?

Krooked Tongue: We love playing music to people. Sure, there’s a million things that make us happy individually, but as musicians, nothing comes close to playing live.

OSR: If you could perform with any musician (living or dead), who would it be and why?

Krooked Tongue: There are a few bands we’d love to play with or tour with. Highly Suspect are one of our biggest influences so that would be a dream come true. Idles would be an epic experience also. Sticking with Bristol bands, Turbowolf would be amazing. Too many great bands to choose from!

OSR: Where do you see yourselves five years from now?

Krooked Tongue: Touring and playing our music as much as we possibly can to many people from as many places as we can.

OSR: Do you have any message for our readers?

Krooked Tongue: Stay unified and keep your head high. Listen to music and invest in the arts.
