A Thousand Hills – One In A Million (2026)
Hailing from Nowy Sacz in Poland, A Thousand Hills brings the musical stylings of James Macfarlane to international ears. A veteran musician, Macfarlane’s songwriting spans a few decades; however, his Spotify only begins with the 2021 single, ‘I Believe’. Either way, from an old or new perspective, this is our introduction to A Thousand Hills – a sound that drags the best of vintage rock to the charm of contemporary indie-pop. Following the single ‘Wake Up’, ‘One In A Million’ is a “poignant time capsule originally penned in the 1990s but re-recorded for a modern audience”. As a blast from the past, one might consider the track old-school, breathing life into memories of yesteryear’s indie scene. Yet, as much as there is vintage stamped across the song, ‘One In A Million’ remains timeless and universal, speaking to audiences across generations with its resonant theme.
Ever heard the phrase, “you’re special and unique just like every other snowflake”? That’s what A Thousand Hills pushes in ‘One In A Million’. You might be like everyone else in identical settings, but you’re entirely individual and the “one in a million” person for someone. A love song, I suppose, bringing warmth, comfort and joy.
Lyrically, it’s simplistic and easy to digest; intimately connecting on a deeper level. Melodically, it’s fun, toe-tapping and makes you feel special. Produced by James Macfarlane with mixing and mastering by Tom Porcell, a steady drum beat in the background, layering the tender song with comforting sounds. Add John Newton’s soaring guitar with Macfarlane’s dulcet vocals, and it’s like sitting outside listening to music and viewing every single star in a velvety dark sky.
While A Thousand Hills don’t have an official music video for the in-studio ‘One In A Million’, there is a bit of an acoustic session treat. Shared on YouTube back in 2022, James Macfarlane jams with songwriter and percussionist James Lawrence – and the “song from the sofa” is a really lovely watch.
