Akin Amusan – Chemical Romance (2020)

Relationships go through a range of different stages, but one that people could not anticipate was lockdown. The separation caused by the pandemic and the emotions this invoked is what Akin Amusan looks at in his latest single ‘Chemical Romance’. Featuring Agi, the single explores this unexpected experience and the implications it has on people in relationships.

Combining elements from his favourite artists, Amusan hits you with his unique sound. His musicality is something that shines through in the single and has been praised while he was part of Leeds Contemporary Singers. This has led to him opening for some of the biggest names in RnB. With this single, he is showcasing his fresh approach to music.

‘Chemical Romance’ draws you in with a soundbite of Boris Johnson telling the public to stay at home. This neatly sets up the theme of the track before Agi’s light vocals hit you. Her imploring tone has this scared vibe that matches the lyrics. Amusan takes over for the next verse and adds to the overall feeling of the song. However, his vocals are more soothing and help put you at ease after the nervousness of Agi’s vocals. When they sing together, their voices perfect meld to softly flow against your ears. Each voice is clear without one overpowering the other forming a sonic relationship bolstering the message of the song.

Below the outstanding vocals is a gentle melody. The deep beats at the start of the song add to the nervous emotions of the lyrics. The lighter tones that enter are easy to float to and move into more RnB tones for Amusan’s vocals. There is a great interplay in the melody that highlights the flow of emotions at this time. The light and deep tones are also a great sonic representation of the two people in a relationship.

Akin Amusan and Agi encapsulate what it felt like to be in a relationship when lockdown hit in ‘Chemical Romance’. The vocal performances steal the show as they flow together and are packed with emotion. The melody has these two tones that work to further the emotion while representing the people within the relationship.
