Alex Comaish – Brother (2024)

Despite his young age and relatively new status in the UK music industry, singer-songwriter Alex Comaish shows sophistication, elegance and ground-breaking appeal in his music. Since his debut EP Coming Up For Air in 2022, Comaish has been turning heads across the UK and beyond. His confident live performances intoxicate audiences at prominent venues like Camden Assembly and 93 Feet East, while his melodies rock the airwaves of BBC Radio. Most recently he reached the finals of the Good Times Talent Show for the chance to support either McFly, Scouting For Girls, Sophie Ellis Bextor or Jools Holland (results still pending). Today, we jump into Comaish’s discography with the latest single ‘Brother’.

Following his well-received debut EP, ‘Brother’ is Comaish’s first release in two years and his blast into 2024. As with previous material, the South Gloucestershire native breathes life into sounds of the 80s and 90s; however, unlike Coming Up For Air, ‘Brother’ wraps an old-school indie-rock meets folk-rock style in a contemporary sonic wrapper.

Recorded in the music department at the University of the West of England, ‘Brother’ is simultaneously an intricate and simplistic melody. A barebones sentimentality flutters across the tune with Comaish’s rich vocals bringing a raw sincerity to the moving song. Yet, the combination of guitars and drums oozes indie-rock with a full-band forcefulness. His first single recorded in a studio with a live band, ‘Brother’ is sophisticated in its arrangement; however, raw youthfulness and sincerity weave around the elegant melody.

Just as the melody is heart-warming and toe-tapping, the lyricism adds profoundness to the jovial ‘Brother’. Comaish explains:

“It’s about my brother. Specifically, it’s about the time that I left my passport in my Uni halls in Durham and only realised it at 11 pm the night before my flight. My brother told me to jump in the car and we drove over 400 miles road trip so I could make the flight in time. I wrote the lyrics down on the coach to the airport. I suppose it’s a love song in a way – I’m not always great at saying it to the people in my life, so this was my way of doing it for my brother.”
