Bernice Marsala – Crazy One (2026)

With soulful eyes and a big, warm smile, you know that singer-songwriter Bernice Marsala is a nice person. Sweet, likeable and the friend you call when you need a shoulder to cry on, someone to share fantastic news with, or just a person to appreciate tea and biscuits as you chat, giggle and sigh happiness. Yet, this is all assumption, and while Marsala might look like she’s a bubble of joy, she is not just a lovely face. Deeper, profound and willing to delve into the complexities of life from trials to triumph with poetic music, Marsala gets you thinking.

Joined by producer and musician Charles Connolly, ‘Crazy One’ is an electronic pop, dance-ready anthem about relationships. Not gaslighting per se, but the situation where you’re just confused because of your partner’s dual personalities – the one where you feel he (or she) understands and maybe cares, but then there’s the impulsive one everyone else sees, and you feel doubly concerned because that and the “what the hell is going on” behind closed doors are so different. Whew, now that was a sentence and a half.

Lyrics like, “I’m keeping my thoughts to myself /While inwardly shaking my head”, and “You’ve got me questioning my whole sense of reality…” perfectly capture the tumultuous rush of feelings where you consider yourself… well, crazy. Yet, executed with smooth, soulful vocals, the protagonist implores that “I can’t be the crazy one in the room.”

Lyrically, it’s a catchy, sing-along worthy tune, and melodically, it’s just as expressive, capturing every raw emotion in sound. A bold beat gives ‘Crazy One’ that electropop vibe, hitting you in the chest – almost a heartbeat pulsing in your ears. The smooth slide of synths adds a rhythmic vibe, but some percussion-like notes clip in the air like those dots of confusion piercing your skin. For me, however, it’s the interspersed saxophone that stands out, breathing a jazzy feeling into the pop-driven tune.

Overall, I really enjoyed ‘Crazy One’ with its retro-finished polish. With the mention of a third album on the horizon, I await more music from Marsala. In the meantime, I’m happy to hit the repeat button on this infectious single.
