Blindness & Light – What Else? (2026)
What began as a plan to release a single has, over the past years, evolved into a discography of 20 singles and three albums. Each song captures one part of the human experience in moving melodies and poetic lyrics. As an informal collective hailing from the UK, Japan and Argentina, it makes sense that every culture and diversity weaves into Blindness & Light’s sound – no boundaries, no limits, and a flexible destination. Come along as we hit the play button on their single ‘What Else?’
Taken from their latest album, Our Man From Fife, ‘What Else?’ steers listeners across approximately four minutes of vintage post-punk. While Mel Dopazo keeps a steady beat with his bass guitar, Glenn Welman smashes the drums, bringing an urgent element to ‘What Else?’ but also a confident, almost deliberate pulse. Colin Potter’s guitar sends ripples that build into sonic waves, adding heaviness and a delightful soaring freedom.
Melodically, each instrument plays a significant role – the drums and lead guitar standing out. However, as much as they weave with their own individuality, a noted rhythm and harmony exist. As with the majority of Blindness & Light’s songs, the vocals appear subtle – a whisper in the growing melody, but also a confidence and a “pay attention” attitude without being too forward. Potter’s rich tenor is backed by Helen Renolds’ delicate and ethereal tones, prompting a strange, enigmatic flair.
The melodic production is intriguing; a song that seeps into your heart and immerses one in a mysterious soundscape. Lyrically, ‘What Else?’ is poignant, profound, and captures the existential issue of self-definition. Blindness & Light explain: “It is about a yearning to be what’s real inside and an obsessive desire to start again; to reset everything, create a new life and a new self.”
Perhaps the fact that I enjoy Blindness & Light’s work might influence this review with a positive bias; then again, I find that listening to any Blindness & Light’s singles is like discovering a new band for the first time. Familiar but new, Potter and his crew continue to entertain.
