Countervela – Least Expected Turns (Casadh Gan Choinne) (2026)
Post-metal and traditional Irish music may seem like genres that would collide, clash and leave a listener confused; however, Countervela finds the sweet spot, weaving music that is complementary, moving and refreshing. Born of the ashes of respected post-metal band Stand-Up Guy, Countervela features seasoned musicians, each bringing their own influences, experiences and skills, along with the instinctual camaraderie of talented players. The band formed in 2002 and released two EPs in the late 2000s; then came a prolonged hiatus, removing the Irish trio from the field. We’re pleased to announce that the lads are back, with an addition to their line-up, and have been enticing audiences with a heavy alternative rock appeal.
On the heels of well-received singles ‘Roseblossom’ and ‘Everything All’, ‘Least Expected Turns (Casadh Gan Choinne)’ is Countervela’s first stomp into 2026. Joining the stylings of Ciaran Colton (vocals and guitars), Michael Ahearn (guitars and samples), Conor Mullan (drums) and newly recruited Philip Donnelly (bass), ‘Least Expected Turns’ is a haunting drag back to the days of Thrice, Nine Inch Nails, Engine Kid, and Neurosis.
Produced by Countervela, listening to ‘Least Expected Turns’ is like setting off on a glistening sonic river. Dark and mysterious, the song opens with ambient tones – a guitar rippling in the water, drums delicately pushing the boat, a strumming bass paddling along. Soft and soothing with rock-tinged delicacy, Eimear Ahern’s haunting vocals whisper in the background. You find yourself feeling calm, relaxed and soothed; but a palpable tension suggests something ferocious is around the corner.
The bend comes, and you are hit between the eyes with a forceful shove of alternative rock. The tumultuous swirls beneath the river’s glassy surface erupt with pounding drums, crashing guitars, a heavy bass, and Ruaidhri’s synths peeping from the background. Colton’s rich vocals scrape and tinge the waves, while the late Coinnaith O’Suilleabhain’s spoken-word weaves between the powerful crashes. For me, the song is left in a skin-tingling mystique as Ahern’s voice leads you out.
Melodically, ‘Least Expected Turns’ is an impressive few minutes of music. With the mention of an upcoming album, I am eager to hear more from Countervela.
