Broncos – Gloom (2026)
As a stark reminder of how exciting the British alternative scene is at the minute, Belfast band Broncos are here with some insanely good post-hardcore. When I first heard their new single, ‘Gloom’, it felt like a love letter from my youth, mirroring so many of the bands I grew up listening to and seeing in small independent venues throughout the early 2000’s.
The calming ethereal intro is calmly hypnotic, gradually building with the layers of guitars, vocals and drums slowly drifting into the foray of sound. The directness of the lyrics works so well on this track, narrating the feeling of knowing a relationship is doomed from the outset and the simplicity of this feeling means that there is no need for them to say anymore or any less.
This whole approach lets the musical talent of Broncos shine through from the great dual vocals of guitarist Cameron Leggat and Shane McMullan, all being tied together with the drumming of Michael Smyth. They are clearly a tight unit. Like I said, they remind me so much of my youth, and I do hear the influences they have cited in At The Drive-In, Alexisonfire and Deftones, but even more so I hear a very British sound akin to the likes of Hell Is For Heroes. Vocally, I was reminded of arguably the unsung heroes of the time, Hundred Reasons.
This is a band that I am extremely interested in and will be following very closely! I’m so glad that after hearing ‘Gloom’, I had a slew of singles to get stuck into, including ‘Hold Me’, ‘Lover’, ‘Lights Out’ and ‘Erode’. All of which left me wanting to hear more and only gave a deeper insight into this great band. I also cannot wait to catch them live; as soon as they announce a UK-wide tour, I will be all over. Hopefully, that isn’t something I’ll have to wait long for. With their debut record, King Laugh, due September 10th – incidentally my birthday – what a present it’ll be!
