Carlos Escanilla – Just A Little While (2024)

Therapist by day and musician all of the time, singer-songwriter Carlos Escanilla brings a vibrant passion for music to international audiences. Blending diverse sounds into a single kaleidoscopic sound, he ignites the flame for raw, honest and authentic melodies with unique flair. Since 2007, he began establishing himself as a player in the Miami, Florida scene; however, as he continues to create boundary-breaking tunes, he reaches far beyond his US borders. This is my introduction to Escanilla, so join me as I dive into his intriguing discography.

Over the past 17 years, Escanilla maintained two bands – one being Carlos & The Experience. Bringing together diverse cultures, experiences and influences, the seven-piece explores vintage soul and Motown but with a contemporary edginess. Following the singles ‘Dim Light’ and ‘Heart On My Sleeve’, the group step into 2024 with the song ‘Just A Little While’.

Shifting from the heavier indie-rock ‘Heart On My Sleeve’, ‘Just A Little While’ dips into vintage soul with a shiver of RnB slithering throughout. Recorded at MiamiBeatWave studios with producer Brandon Toledo, ‘Just A Little While’ is a flamboyant fusion of horns, drums and guitar. Woven together in a bright sonic tapestry, each instrument adds its own colour before uniting in a harmonic whole. Escanilla’s guitar meets Jorge Tercilla’s stand-up bass in a rush of mellifluous sound; however, each instrument is prominent enhancing the vibrancy of the single. For me, however, it is Ale Pizarro’s trumpet that slices through with a toe-tapping blast of soul.

Just as the melody is intriguing with Carlos Escanilla’s rich vocals binding it together, the lyricism of ‘Just A Little While’ adds emotional depth. Touching on the intricacies of relationships, ‘Just A Little While’ is about the “right person, wrong time” dilemma – a situation with much heartache and confusion. Escanilla explains:

It’s about meeting the right person at the wrong time and one person realising they have to walk out, while the other asks them to stay.”

Sincere, sentimental, tender and heart-warming, Carlos & The Experience explore human vulnerability with laidback vibes in ‘Just A Little While’.
