The brainchild of singer-songwriter Catherine Thomas, Chapalu is a genre-hopping solo project sauntering across pop, alternative rock, trip-hop, jazz, soft rock, Britpop, and, in her words (or at least on her website), “basically anything other than EDM, rap or country music that references pick-up trucks or religion.” Originally from Wales, Thomas found a passion for music as a child, learning classical piano, the cello, the double bass, and guitar, and has performed with orchestras – all the time burning that flame for music deep in her soul. Produced by Iain Mahanty and featuring vocalist Virginia Richardson, ‘I Will Find You’ is an almost three-minute sweep of Britpop music. Now, listening to the single is not only an audio experience; its vividness, vivacity, and all-around atmospheric nature are ones to be experienced, not merely heard.
As if heading off on a sonic path in the middle of a forest, ‘I Will Find You’ is a delicate concoction of drums and guitars. Stepping onto the path with a simple, steady strumming melody, you find comfortable footing; then, things become a little hectic. As the song progresses, the tempo becomes a little faster and more intense. You feel mischievous imps peeping from the background while storm clouds hover above with the threat of rain crashing down, a potential whirlwind clipping at your back, and the walk turns to a run. Yet, instead of being totally lost, the bold vocals are like a friend holding your hand, leading to a light ahead.
