Chasing Felix – Give It Away (2022)

Initially formed in 2016 as a musical outlet for frontman Damien Fegan, Chasing Felix is Ireland’s answer to Tame Impala. Moving forward, Damien Fegan drew together the talents of Gavin Doyle and Peter Dzvonik to create the energetic, engaging band, Chasing Felix. Yet, while they were turning heads and garnering a following, that proverbial bump in the road hit in 2018 when the group’s gig-rig was pilfered at a festival; then the pandemic came along. Following a reinvestment in gig equipment, lockdowns and downtime, Chasing Felix is re-emerging with a new sound and single in ‘Give It Away’.

Following their post-punk-influenced melody ‘Mexico’, ‘Give It Away’ is the second single to be released in 2022. As with ‘Mexico’, ‘Give It Away’ has a psychedelic ambience drawing together post-punk, synth-pop and new wave sentiments into an almost four-minute package. Moreover, as with ‘Mexico’, there is a nostalgic flair to the music as Chasing Felix drags audiences back to the twinkling sounds of the 80s with the whimsical haze of the new single. Unlike previous material, the more recent melodies show an evolution in the band’s sound as they move from indie-rock-inspired songs to a dreamy wave of psychedelia. Perhaps this is the evidence of new arrival Matheus Costa whose “classy guitar lines stimulate the senses in new and exciting ways”.

Produced by frontman Damien Fagen in Sao Palo’s Estudio Ekord, the lads describe ‘Give It Away’ as “layering swathes of crate-dug samples with vintage sound synths to create something very new and very catchy.” In my opinion, the sound is not only new and catchy but also a break from the humdrum of shoegaze indie-pop that we hear so often nowadays. It breathes fresh life into the 21st-century dream-pop design but still retains the retro style of yesteryear. All in all, it’s sublime.
