Chucky Trading Co – Sleepwalking Through History (2023)
Combine the natural talents of composer Everett Young and singer-songwriter CS Taber and what do you have? You have the insatiable stylings of Chucky Trading Co. Throughout 2022, US-based Chucky Trading Co (CTC) has held our attention intoxicating us with songs like ‘Honey Bee’, ‘Sweet & Sour’, ‘What I Want’ and ‘Psychopath Cool’. Yet, we are not the only ones paying attention to CTC with coverage from Rock Era Magazine, Sinusoidal Music, Send Me Your Ears, Rising Artists Blog and Illustrate Magazine (to name a few). The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Sleepwalking Through History’.
Inspired by life in its entirety, CTC often navigates loss, love, life experiences and the consequential intimacy in their singles – as is the case in ‘Sleepwalking Through History’. Touching on the case of “mismatched hearts”, ‘Sleepwalking Through History’ is the first release from Chucky Trading Co in 2023. Following their track ‘The Scars Of Our War’, the new single blends elements of classic rock with folk in the mellifluous melody.
I would say there is a signature sound to Chucky Trading Co, but that would be a bit of a lie. It is their obscurity that stands out with the innovative lyricism and instrumentation that makes the pair intriguing. In ‘Sleepwalking Through History’, the pair find the delicate balance between acoustic and synthetic using an interspersed piano with electronic guitars. Bring in CS Taber’s rich vocals and you have a heart-melting song sending you off on a glistening sonic cloud.
While the melody can hold its own, it is the lyrical content that adds a certain depth to ‘Sleepwalking Through History’. A narrative of Woodstock lovers many years later, a poignancy exists in the reflective single. Listening to ‘Sleepwalking Through History’ is like sitting at the feet of your parent as they tell you all about their life and experiences – you know, when they share stories about stuff they got up to and probably want you to avoid. Easy going and chilled out, a laidback vibe emerges in ‘Sleepwalking Through History’, but you know there is a more powerful theme hiding behind the melody.
