Davie Furey – The Rose of Bohermeen (2023)

2023 has been a sensational rollercoaster ride for singer-songwriter Davie Furey. He reached our ears with the well-received ‘Stargazer’ and then enchanted audiences on his tour with Paul Brady. Known for his engaging lyrics, confident stage presence, and enchanting performances, it is no wonder his following grows with each show; however, his music is as charming on Spotify as it is live. Today, he seeks to win us over (and probably will) with his new single ‘The Rose of Bohermeen’.

Following his critically acclaimed single ‘Stargazer’, Furey collaborates with producer Martin Quinn of JAM Studio once again. Like ‘Stargazer’, ‘The Rose of Bohermeen’ carries listeners across the simplistic melody with a mellifluous flow. Filling your soul with melodic sincerity and sensitivity, the track has a tranquil nature to it enhanced by the acoustic instruments and Furey’s dulcet vocals. Slivers of electric guitar tinge the track, but its organic harmony makes the song entirely calming. Martin Quinn takes the bass with a fluttering piano in the background, while Furey soothes us with the acoustic guitar alongside his warm voice.

As with all of Furey’s music, rhythmic harmonies weave together to create a shining tapestry of emotional sound. Unlike previous material, ‘The Rose of Bohermeen’ was not penned by Furey but by Bohermeen-born playwright (and who happens to be Furey’s former English teacher), Richie Ball. Furey shares, “This song came as a complete surprise to me…it was a great privilege to be able to blend Richie’s beautiful, gentle lyrics to music.”

When speaking of the heartfelt theme of ‘The Rose of Bohermeen’, Ball explained: “’The Rose of Bohermeen” recalls an aunt I never knew who used to sing with her younger brother, my dad, at Christmas midnight mass many years ago. It’s the only story he ever told of her. She died at seventeen. I am a huge admirer of Davie’s work, so I was delighted that he not only liked the words but agreed to put them to music…He has worked his magic here. I am more than grateful.”

Warm, rich, moving and soul-stirring, ‘The Rose of Bohermeen’ has a haunting whisper of mystical whimsey as a love song. Not exactly a Christmas song per se, but would it hurt to have this playing on Christmas day? As beautiful as a hymn, although leaning toward the Simon & Garfunkel folk-ness, ‘The Rose of Bohermeen’ will be on my Christmas playlist. I hope it will be on yours.
