Delta Fire – Eyes Burn Gold (2026)
Since hearing their first single, ‘Lady Danger’, Glaswegian four-piece Delta Fire are one of those acts that seem to just hit all the right notes for me and with their new single ‘Eyes Burn Gold’, they’ve just solidified my opinion of them.
From the opening riff, the track hits you with a haunting sound, which captivates you with a serene haziness that I just got lost in. The distinct sound of the 70’s can be heard from the get-go, akin to the sounds crafted by the fantastic Mark Knopfler nearly half a century ago, which is nothing to be scoffed at. Then come in the subtle yet powerful vocals, which melt perfectly with the music. ‘Eyes Burn Gold’ lyrically isn’t the most catchy, but that doesn’t matter as this is a band who don’t need to rely on sing-along hooks to keep themselves interesting and relevant. I love the introspective storytelling that skillfully weaves a narrative you can just get lost in.
When I first heard Delta Fire, I couldn’t place why vocally they were so familiar to me, but with further listens, it dawned on me it was early 00’s British band Vex Red, and I couldn’t help but draw similarities with their lead singer, Terry Abbot. How they pull influences from all angles is something to be commended and shows great musical intelligence to learn from their predecessors, whilst really making a style all of their own.
When I learnt they’ve cut their teeth in the same venues as other Scottish greats, including Mogwai, Teenage Fan Club and Franz Ferdinand, to name but a few, it increased my adoration for these guys. This just means I have high expectations when I see them live, which I intend to do as soon as they venture further south.
I’m really enjoying the resurgence in British Alternative Rock and can’t wait to hear more from Delta Fire. Even after just two such strong singles and surely more to come, I can confidently say the fair city of Glasgow has bestowed upon us yet another great band, and here’s hoping we don’t have to wait too long for some more music!
