Double Comfort Safari – Seven Years Old (2022)

We all have plans and dreams that we want to achieve, but life rarely goes the way we want. This is something that Double Comfort Safari consider in their single ‘Seven Years’ as they delve into the determination and courage needed to carry on pushing even when life takes a detour. Using a touch of nostalgia mixed into the realisation that life is passing us by, there is a sense of hope woven into the fabric of the track that leaves an empowering glimmer in its wake.

A wonderful single for anyone who has a dream that seems unreachable, it combines reaching for what you want and knowing that not being perfect is okay. Paul Renwick, the solo musician behind this project, started out on the local music scene as a bassist, before becoming the singer and songwriter of the indie-rock band Kiev. Over time, he developed the eclectic mix of synths, grooves and guitars that characterise this project and looks to uplift through a message of resilience.

‘Seven Years’ shimmers and sweeps a warm vibe across your senses, with a deep beat and swaying Reggae. There is no way you can stand still while listening to the melody as it sinks into your muscles and moves them without your conscious consent. The danceable movements of the melody drop for a softer, almost ambient, flow that relaxes your soul. There is a great chilled summer vibe to the music that makes you want to sit in the sun with a cool drink and soak up peaceful vibes. This is tinged with a sprinkling of nostalgia that glimmers through the soundscape.

While the melody is packed with chilled vibes and warm summer sun, the lyrics take a detour from this vibe and consider the way life doesn’t always go as we want. Renwick’s vocals are wonderfully rich as they enter, like a drink of cold water against the warmth of the music. Through the opening verse, he offers a connection with everyone listening and the understanding that you are not alone feeling like you are adrift. As you head into the chorus, there is a wave of hope and strength that comes through the lyrics. Through the track, he considers the past and brings a realisation that life is passing us by. This is tempered by the chorus that lets you know that holding on to your youthful dreams is not a bad thing and that you do have the courage to push forward with them.

Double Comfort Safari balances warm summer vibes with the realisation of the passage of time and holding onto youthful dreams in the easy listening experience that is ‘Seven Years Old’. The music is packed with summer vibes that relax your soul while getting you moving to his rhythm. His vocals pack a lot into the single, from nostalgia to the courage to push forward when life doesn’t go the way you thought it would.
