Ella Lockert – Fake A Smile (2022)

Described by notable blogs as “boasting a powerful and captivating vocal quality…” (Dusty Organ), “manages to inspire and empower us…” (Swedish POPMUZIK) and being a “great innovation” (Sinusoidal Music), Ella Lockert is a singer-songwriter set for success. While Lockert is only 17 years old, she has been creating music since early childhood and captured listeners on a global scale with her debut EP Confusing in 2021. The latest addition to her well-received discography is the single ‘Fake A Smile’.

Following her song ‘Excuses’, Norwegian Ella Lockert adopts an eclectic, genre-defying sound with ‘Fake A Smile’. Beginning as a pop-inspired single, ‘Fake A Smile’ takes you back to the 90s pop sound; however, movements from pop to punk to indie-rock exist within the melodic arrangement. Unlike her likeness to Paramore in ‘Excuses’, the new tune is a pissed-off Gwen Stefani with the crazy “in your face” attitude of Boomkat’s Taryn Manning. Yet, despite the comparisons, Ella Lockert is creating a contemporary meets old-school pop sprinkled with punk style.

Interestingly enough, the ferocity of the melody elegantly carries Lockert’s warm vocals, but don’t get too comfortable. Heavy and hard-hitting with a rich, full-bodied tone, ‘Fake A Smile’ slaps you across the face before hitting you in the guts and leaving you breathless. Touching on the topic of cheating in a relationship, or rather the hope of cheaters changing, Lockert’s personal narrative is bittersweet, ironic and intriguing. She explains that while the song “…gives you the full bittersweet sensation of the story, the heart wants to believe that a cheater won’t cheat; that it’s different this time because this time it’s you”
