Gill Guillermo – Wall (2021)

Over time, memories of lost loved ones start to fade and get dimmer. This experience has been captured by Gill Guillermo in his single ‘Wall’. The single unveils his upcoming EP Listen to the Wind which closes a chapter of his life. Through the sounds of the music, you get the feeling of watching the world move on as the person you have lost stays young for eternity while slowly fading from your memories.

Guillermo brings these emotions to life with a blended soundscape crafted from his travels and education at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. Bringing psychedelic folk to bossa-nova and pop, he fills you with the anguish of losing a loved one and the emotional journey that follows. As a taster for the EP, the single captures the emotional nuance of his style while weaving relatable tales.

‘Wall’ pulls you in with a subtle guitar line that has a light touch of warbling psychedelic tones hovering over it. There is a soft feeling to the melody that has you sinking into a wave of nostalgia. The build-up over the verses gently crests on the chorus for a burst of light. There is a good feeling on the first chorus before the melody takes a more paced turn. The pulses of the guitar tones merge with the wobbly psychedelic tones to create a twirl of emotional turmoil.

While the music sonically brings the twists and turns of emotions to musical life, Guillermo’s vocals really bring the emotions home. His voice matches the subtle softness of the opening as he draws you toward the chorus. When the music peaks, his vocals hit an emotional high that pulls on your heart filling you with a tragic despair. His voice is packed so full of the heartbreak of losing a loved one that you feel like you are experiencing the loss yourself. Through the lyrics, you also sink into the daze that follows and the realisation that this person only lives on in your memories. The chorus is so emotive that it bowls you over each time you hear it.
