HJ Soul – Unbreakable (2026)
Impressing audiences with his renditions of classic soul and R&B hits, HJ Soul is already turning heads with a set of covers; however, the UK-based artist has as much originality sharing authentic, individual melodies. Always drawn to discovering “…the meaning of ‘who am I’ and what the deeper truth of my existence actually is…”, HJ Soul connects with listeners on an intimate, resounding and personal level. This is my introduction to HJ Soul, which isn’t too strange considering he has only one song in his discography – according to Spotify, that is. Join us as we listen to his single, ‘Unbreakable’.
‘Unbreakable’ is a true expression of music that comes from the soul with real meaning attached. Produced by Philip Davidson, the single brims with duality: simplicity in a sparse, acoustic soundscape, yet retaining a degree of intricate sincerity in a wave of kaleidoscopic instrumentation. Twinkling and charming, ‘Unbreakable’ opens with a piano-driven line setting the stage for a minimalist jazz tone; then, HJ soul’s vocals kick in, taking us from baseline to a rush of soulful music clasping at your heart.
The steady drums, soothing piano, and slices of horns – a saxophone, I think – drag you to the smoky jazz clubs; the ones where you feel the music soak into your bones as you enjoy your favourite cool beverage. Comforting you with rich, honey-soaked vocals, there is a velvety feel to the music, and you lose yourself; however, the switch to spoken word at the end really emphasises the humanity, reality, and individuality of the song.
