Human History. – Moonchild (2021)

While he may not have set out to be a solo artist, singer-songwriter Robert Murray finds himself embracing a solo career under the moniker Human History. Using a personal narrative, Murray sonically represents his “dysfunctional share of mistakes” in smooth, flowing melodies. The ex-frontman of The Prison Library and Spies in Limbo, the UK-based artist has performed alongside the likes of Kaiser Chiefs, The Verve, Ghost Poet, The Sex Pistols and Travis. Yet, it is in his solo project that Murray displays impassioned intimacy connecting with audiences across the globe.

The sixth single from Human History., ‘Moonchild’ shows a similarity to Travis and Coldplay but with an overwhelming uniqueness distinct to Robert Murray. Elegantly traversing different tones, timbres and paces, the single incorporates upbeat pop with steadier indie-rock. It is this incorporation of buoyancy amidst the melodic melancholy that makes the track soul-stirring.

Differing from the lighthearted ‘I’m Ready To Act (Natural)’, ‘Moonchild’ is a darker tune with distinct rock influences in the melody. Yet, while there is a change in pace, Murray once again touches on issues like anxiety, frustration, confusion and desperation. The lyricism is poignant, but I find it is Murray’s gruff vocals that send shivers down your spine.

In addition to the single ‘Moonchild’, Murray released an official music video. Unfortunately, I was unable to watch the majority of the video because of strobe lighting effects; however, I do want to comment on the bits I could watch. A rather personal video, the single encapsulates the concept of ‘Moonchild’ exploring the fragility of the human spirit. It’s odd that a few snippets of someone playing the guitar, responding to text messages and Murray singing could communicate all this, but this is what Human History. does. He takes the delicate essence of our being and portrays it in a reflective, insightful way.
