JASMINE IS – Passion (2023)

It’s always fantastic to discover up-and-coming musicians and JASMINE IS falls into the category of exciting, intriguing and intoxicating new acts. While the British singer-songwriter began releasing music a few months ago, she is hardly a shrinking violet in the overgrown forest that is the music industry. Since ‘Miss You While I’m Sleeping’, JASMINE IS has been featured in notable international publications such as York Calling, Tinnitist, Nagamag, Plastic Magazine and Space Sour reaching far beyond her Canadian borders. Come with us as we dip into one of the most recent additions to her discography – ‘Passion’.

Taken from her debut album HEAR, ‘Passion’ oozes power and confidence in a pop wrapper. Touching on every flavour of pop in her album, I can effortlessly place JASMINE IS alongside Katy Perry, Jessie J or Shawn Mendes on a playlist. Following her upbeat single ‘Love of Money’, JASMINE IS might fall into the category of electronic pop/dance; however, her versatility and genre diversity is clearly noted in ‘Passion’.

A remote collaboration with producer Phillip Larsen, ‘Passion’ elegantly melds fiery pop with sensual soul and a sprinkling of African gospel through the backing vocals. While the melody certainly has a flair to it, it is the vocal execution that ups the ante. With a soothing, soft and sincere voice, JASMINE IS reaches into your soul and sends you twirling about in a sonic whirlpool. Yet, just as it is soothing, there is an underlying ferocity and joyfulness that lifts your spirit pushing the message of living life with empathy and compassion.

“Compassion is something that is truly lacking in the world right now. I wanted to write a song that conveyed this message but at the same time needed it to feel hopeful.” – JASMINE IS on ‘Passion’
