Unafraid to unpack existential issues, the mundane everyday, and the triumphant celebrations, Joseph Turner & The Dudes of Hazard weave their melodies through the core of human experience, and we happily join them on the journey. Following the well-received single, ‘The Shadow Remains’, described as a gripping slice of Americana, the Netherlands-based Turner and his rotating collective of musicians release ‘Backbone’.
Produced by Joseph Turner with long-time collaborators Yannich Bovens (mixing) and Sam Moses (mastering), ‘Backbone’ dives further into the blues side of Americana. A pulsating drum beat in the background keeps time, while guitars sweep across the melody. While the quintessential arrangement of the guitar, bass and drums holds you in the palm of Turner’s hand, it is the innovative percussion and real-life sounds that up the ante.
Interspersed in ‘Backbone’ is a bluesy harmonica, adding a slight twang and sense of poignancy with a deal of toe-tapping humour to the track. Yet, the real heart of the song – melodically, that is – to get beneath your skin is the troupe of backing vocalists with hands clapping, voices soaring, and a gospel choir-esque vibe where you can’t help but start dancing.
Sonically, ‘Backbone’ is a riot of fun with an acoustic roots-rock intensity that wouldn’t go amiss in the Delta Blues. Lyrically, Turner and his dudes fit the tune perfectly. It’s a song of grit, determination, resilience and strength when faced with challenges… or life, really. Turner explains: “’Backbone’ is a reminder to keep going when things get tough. Sometimes you just have to stop overthinking it, dig in and push through. The song is about finding that stubborn bit of determination and getting back at it…. It is about rolling up your sleeves, getting your feet dirty, and finding the energy to keep moving.”
