Lilac Thief – take care. (2022)

The brainchild of singer-songwriter Joshua Julien, Lilac Thief merges elements of contemporary pop with indie-pop in his music. Potentially comparable to the likes of Shawn Mendes, Lilac Thief wraps you in a comfortable bubble of pop but has a mild indie-rock tinge. With only one single to his name, Lilac Thief may be considered a newbie in the industry; however, he is certainly hitting it with a bang. Receiving coverage from YMX, Tongue Tied Magazine, Info Music, Australian Music Radio Airplay Project and iHeart Radio (to name but a few), Lilac Thief is reaching audiences on a global scale. Come with us as we delve into his debut single ‘take care.’

Describing his music as “bittersweet pop”, this talented artist questions what bittersweetness sounds like? In ‘take care.’ Julien (as Lilac Thief) may just have cracked it. Opening with delicate synths and drumbeats, ‘take care.’ reaches into your soul guiding you through a wistful sonic fog. A well-layered melody, there is a harmonic balance between Julien’s rich vocals and the whimsical tune. Potentially my favourite part of ‘take care.’ is the ending. I don’t mean I wanted the song to end, but rather that the final dying out of hazy waves leads to a solitary endnote. It is as if all the intimacy is placed in this simplistic gesture.

Just as the melody has a melancholic feel, Lilac Thief showcases his depth with intimate lyricism. According to Info Music, Lilac Thief aims to “influence the emotion and melancholy of his listeners” and he truly reaches this goal in ‘take care.’ Touching on the cycle of love, the debut track explores beginnings, endings, mourning and celebration. A look at the sad, the happy, the exciting and the despair, ‘take care.’ represents the fragility and intricacy of the human soul.

The first single from his upcoming album A Mortal Garden, ‘take care.’ is our introduction to the intense, vulnerable and sophisticated sound of Lilac Thief.
