Lilia Asha – My Morbid Reverie (2026)
At only 15, singer-songwriter Lilia Asha is a teenager. A child who should be swooning over rock stars, scribbling in her diary, and enjoying those coming-of-age films with a carefree attitude – not so much. In today’s society, and for many days gone by, the universal feelings of frustration, confusion, uncertainty and difficulty dealing with issues like mental health and bullying are ever-present, and today’s teenagers are adults before their time. Using her songwriting and musical creativity, Asha might be 15, but her music is ageless. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘My Morbid Reverie’.
Recorded and produced in Shanghai by Vitalii Kuzokov and Ding Fei Fei, with mixing and mastering by Michael J Falco in Sydney, the English songstress binds raw, honest, poetic lyricism with intensely emotional music. A sweep of alternative pop, ‘My Morbid Reverie’ uses the organic charm of a mostly acoustic single. The piano opens the track – delicate and fragile – then a pulsating drum builds on the piano, adding a heaviness to its tenderness. Guitars crash, and a bass pounds like tumultuous waves in a sonic ocean. From one side to the next, you swirl about, gasping for breath; then the haunting vocals hold you close while also leading you like a siren.
For me, the most chilling element in ‘My Morbid Reverie’ is Asha’s haunting vocals. Powerful without being forceful, confident without losing vulnerability, her dulcet tones dance across your skin, leaving tingles in her wake. This is particularly intriguing as the poetic lyrics and elegant though gritty execution capture the painful trap of ‘My Morbid Reverie’s theme. Asha explains:
“It’s probably one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written. It’s about feeling trapped inside your own mind and not knowing what’s real and what’s not. I wrote it during a difficult time, and songwriting became a way for me to deal with everything I was feeling.”
I come across numerous artists with my work, but Lilia Asha is the first to make me tear up in a long time. Sincere and sentimental with brutal honesty and intense intimacy, she both pierced and won my heart. Asha has natural talent, and I cannot wait for more.
