LJ and the Ray Band – Heels (2026)
Strut, pose, twirl about, then click your fingers ’cause you still got it! That is what LJ and the Ray Band’s ‘Heels’ is all about. A song of joy, fun, inspiration and excitement, all set to a groovy vibe that breathes life into the 1980s funk scene. Nostalgic but with a timeless theme, the UK-based band speak to listeners of all generations and caresses each person with a loving hand – and don’t forget that cheeky wink. But who is LJ and the Ray Band anyway?
Drawing together the velvet vocals of showman LJ (also known as Lloyd Garrett), the bold bass of Jessy Boateng, the sensational horns of Danny Flam, and the multi-instrumentalist stylings of Lee Travis, LJ and the Ray Band is the band that invites you to get down, dance it up and have a roaring good time. So, come with us as we delve into that single, ‘Heels’.
Produced by Lloyd Garrett and Lee Travis, ‘Heels’ is smooth and soothing yet has the spunk of an upbeat, glitter-ball-turning session on the disco’s dancefloor. Sitting in the background are the steady drums, while the bass is the bold pulse of the single. Guitars weave into the multi-coloured sonic tapestry with a soaring, swerving sensation; however, it is the horn section that truly adds a funked-out weightiness to ‘Heels’. Not piercing or stabbing, but peeking out in short bursts – like an imp quickly showing his mischievous face – the horns give ‘Heels’ a little cheeky something-something.
Dancing atop the velvety melody is LJ’s velvety vocals. Charming and enticing, his honey-soaked tones inspire some strutting but also lure you into that dodgy suede couch in the back, where who knows what happens. What I find is that the silky vocals and rhythmic groove perfectly align with the theme of ‘Heels’ – “equal parts celebration and rebellion, the track is… a moment to escape, connect, and simply be.”
In addition to the single, LJ and the Ray Band released an official music video for ‘Heels’. You can view the video below and/or on their YouTube channel.
